On May 2018, first of a kind Surgery was performed in Israel – a 10 year old boy was implanted with a unique 3D printed bone that was specifically tailored to his anatomy.
The child suffered of Ewing Sarcoma tumor in the Cuboid, a foot bone. Orthopedic Oncology Department at Ichilov TLV Medical Center in its efforts to provide the best care for the child, took the case to the next level and designed a custom implant based on patient’s anatomy to duplicate the precise shape of his cuboid bone, using Synergy3dmed capabilities.
Dr. Solomon Dadia and Dr. Yair Gortzak, who planned and performed the Surgery, gently removed the infected cuboid bone from the patient’s foot and replaced it with a custom metal implant. The implant was manufactured by STI Laser Industries from Or Akiva, Israel, the first and only company in Israel, certified by DEKRA notifying body for using a novel Electron Beam Melting 3D printing technology for patient-specific implants. The operation was successful, the surgeons commented that the implant has exceeded their expectation and soon the child could go back to walk on his feet.
